VPN

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) uses public connections such as the Internet to connect two networks, one computer and a network or two computers.

A so-called tunnelling protocol is used in order to prevent outside access to the data transmission. The protocol encrypts and decrypts the data being transmitted.

The background for such a technology: In order to save costs, field workers can transmit data to a central location much more cheaply by using public lines than it would be to create their own network.
