Server

A server is a special computer in a network that can perform different tasks.
  • As the so-called file server, the system mainly provides data, programs, and storage space.

  • As a mail server, the system processes incoming or outgoing e-mail and distributes the messages to the correct accounts.

  • As a print server, the system sends print commands from different computers to specific printers.

Most of these functions are provided by the network operating system. Windows NT and Novell Netware are the most well-known and most commonly used operating systems.

Computers that log into such a server are known as clients or workstations (a term introduced by Windows NT).
