Scanner

A scanner is a device to digitise images, that is, the conversion of images into a format that can be read by a computer.

The scanner determines the location of every pixel in the image and sends the value of the light that reflected from or passed through the image (e.g., slides) to the PC.

The computer saves this data in a file and generally compresses it as well.

If the user wants to further edit scanned text on the computer, a special procedure must be used: OCR or optical character recognition.
