Redundancy

Redundancy means that there is more of something than is needed to accomplish a task.

1.In terms of data, this means that more data is available or being transmitted than is necessary. This makes it possible to check if the data has arrived correctly.

For example, CDs use redundant data to correct errors and online connections (e.g., via modem) often transmit additional data also for the purpose of error correction.

2.In terms of hardware, redundancy means that there are multiple devices (even though only a fraction of these devices are needed for the system to be functional). Such hardware redundancy increases stability and/or speed, for example, RAID
