LAN

"LAN" (acronym for "local area network") refers to a relatively small network usually limited to a single building.

It is possible to connect several LANs to each other to create a larger network consisting of numerous small LANs. Such a larger network is known as a wide area network (WAN).

A LAN typically consists of PCs and workstations that make their resources available to other computers in the network, which is a network's primary purpose.

For example, with a LAN consisting of 20 connected computers, it is possible to use a single printer connected to a PC for printing documents from all of the connected computers.

LANs differ from each other in three significant ways:
  • Topology: The computers' physical arrangement
  • Protocols: The "language" used by the computers to communicate with each other.
  • Media: For example, type of cable, hubs, switches, etc.
