Internet

The Internet is a decentralised, global network – i.e., it does not depend on any single computer.

Originally developed as ARPANet for the U.S. military, it is now accessible to millions of users.

The Net is made up of a series of subnets; TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) is the network protocol that is always used.

The Internet primarily consists of the following services (application options offered by providers):

  • E-mail, the most commonly used service.
  • World Wide Web, the second most commonly used service.
  • Usenet, also called news groups.
  • FTP, service for transferring files.
