ISDN

ISDN is the acronym for Integrated Services Digital Network. It is an international communication standard for transmitting voice, video and digital data.

ISDN requires special metal cables and supports data transfer rates of up to 64,000 bits per second (bps). Most ISDN lines on the market consist of two lines, so-called B channels, that can be used in different ways:

Either one line is used for telephone services with the other being used to transmit data, or both lines can be bundled for data transmission with a combined data transfer rate of 128,000 bps, a little more than twice the speed of today's fastest modems (56,000 bps according to the V.90 standard).
