IPSec

IPSec stands for IP Security Protocol and is an IETF development standard for the secure transmission of data.

It is a group of protocols. IPSec is very important in the deployment of VPNs (Virtual Private Networks).

There are two encryption modes: Transport mode - also called Authentication Header (AH) - encrypts the data that is sent over the Internet. Tunnel mode - also called Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP) - encrypts both the header as well as the data of each packet.

The encryption algorithm can be selected; the most commonly used is ISAKMP/Oakley (International Security Association and Key Management Protocol).
