Ethernet
"Ethernet", a local area network technology, was developed by Xerox in its Palo Alto Research Centre in 1973 and presented as a product by DEC, Intel and Xerox in 1980.
Ethernet uses the CSMA/CD network protocol for handling simultaneous demands or collisions.
Familiar (currently incompatible) versions are Ethernet 1.0 (no longer in use in most cases), Ethernet 2.0, as well as the IEEE 802.3 standard which is based on Ethernet 2.0.
In addition to the "yellow cable" ("Thick Ethernet", thick coaxial cable), Ethernet is also operated with other coaxial cables ("Thin Ethernet"), fibre optic cables, etc.
In version 2.0 and IEEE 802.3, Ethernet supports data transfer rates of up to 10 Mbps.
