Domain
A "domain" is the term for logical subnets within networks. In the Internet especially, the domain is an important method of organisation. Almost all of the computers on the Internet have a domain.
The top-level domain is very important. It indicates whether a server belongs to an organisation or is located in a particular country (for a list of country abbreviations, see below).
This is easily recognisable by looking at the suffix or ending (see URL).
The term subdomain is also common. This term refers to the first sequence of letters in front of the server name (almost always www on the World Wide Web).
Some providers are willing to sell subdomains so that the owners of homepages with long addresses can have a short one instead (e.g., Notrix).
