DNS

A "DNS" (acronym for "Domain Name Server") translates the symbolic name of an Internet host to its unique, numerical IP address.

Because it is nearly impossible to work with numerical IP addresses, most computers are given a name that is made up of two or more words separated by dots and which is much easier to remember. See Domain.
