DDR-SDRAM

DDR-SDRAM, the abbreviation for Double Data Rate SDRAM, refers to a special type of RAM that can transfer twice as much data as standard SDRAM.

The trick lies in the timing of the data transfer. RAM can transfer data on each clock cycle of the front side bus.

Normal SDRAM transfers data at the rising edge of the clock cycle only; DDR-SDRAM transfers on the falling edge as well, doubling the data rate.

DDR-SDRAM was designed as the counterpart to Rambus which was supposed to become the standard memory architecture with Intel's support; due to its high price Rambus has remained relatively unpopular, however.
