Cluster

A group of sectors on a hard drive or diskette. The operating system assigns a specific number (of sectors) to a cluster and then records in which clusters the files are located. Sometimes - after a crash, for example - the operating system may mark a cluster as being occupied even though there is no data in it. These are called lost clusters. You can retrieve this storage space but should check whether important data is stored in the cluster beforehand. In DOS and Windows, a lost cluster can be retrieved using Scandisk.

In DOS and Windows, clusters are managed by the File Allocation Table (FAT). The size of a cluster depends on the size of the hard drive partition.
