ANSI

ANSI is the acronym for the American National Standards Institute (founded in 1918), similar to the German DIN.
In Windows, ANSI is used to control characters, where each character is assigned a number. A character can be accessed using its assigned number by holding down the Alt key while entering the ANSI code preceded by a zero. This can be useful when typing characters that are not available on a standard keyboard (e.g., multiplication sign: Alt+0215).
