Windows Vista ist Microsofts XP-Nachfolger, der 2006 erscheinen soll.

Windows Vista ist das 2006 erscheinende Desktop-Betriebssystem von Microsoft, für das vormals der Name Longhorn geplant war. Der Name Vista kommt aus dem Spanischen und bedeutet "Blick, Sicht, Perspektive". Vista implementiert folgende neue Technologien:

WinFX, a managed-code programming model

Windows Presentation Foundation (formerly Avalon), Microsoft's unified presentation subsystem for Windows

Windows Communication Foundation (formerly Indigo), Microsoft's next-generation Web services technology

Aero, the new Windows Vista design philosophy

Microsoft stellt auf einer eigenen Website einige weiterführende Informationen zu Windows Vista bereit.

Kritisiert wird derzeit vor allem, da Microsoft in Vista den offenen 3D-Grafikstandard OpenGL zugunsten von Direct3D vernachlässige bzw. OpenGL nur durch Direct3D emuliert werde.

"In practice this means for OpenGL under Aeroglass: OpenGL performance will be significantly reduced - perhaps as much as 50%, OpenGL on Windows will be fixed at a vanilla version of OpenGL 1.4, No extensions will be possible to expose future hardware innovations. It would be technically straightforward to provide an OpenGL ICD within the full Aeroglass experience without compromising the stability or the security of the operating system. Layering OpenGL over Direct3D is a policy more than a technical decision."



Als Serverplattform bewirbt Microsoft nach wie vor seinen Windows Server 2003, der sowohl in einer 32-bit-Version als auch in einer 64-bit-Version erhältlich ist.
